Christmas is the Ideal Time to Pick Up a Bargain
Are stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? Treat the whole family by upgrading that old banger for a new set of wheels.
With Black Friday and Cyber Monday now behind us, the country is officially on full throttle Christmas mode. This is causing some interesting patterns to emerge in different consumer sectors. The supermarkets and the big online retailers like Amazon are, of course, full of Christmas cheer and laughing all the way to the bank. For sectors like the motor trade, however, this is a lean period. After all, who has the time or money to buy a car in the run up to Christmas?
It’s a good question, but if you can answer “I do” this could be the perfect time to grab yourself a bargain. Car dealers know that buyers are a rare species at this time of year, and they will be desperate to offer you some fantastic deals if it means you’ll provide them with that elusive sale. So if your old motor is on its last legs, why not pension it off, get some cash back for it and go out Christmas shopping for something the whole family will enjoy?
Out with the old
December is not a good time to try to sell a car, particularly one that has more or less reached the end of the road. You could try putting it on an internet auction site or in a free ads paper, but to be honest, you’ll probably be waiting till New Year, and even then, you’ll get a few coins for it. Far better to get a scrap car quote online – you’ll be offered a fair market value, instant payment by bank transfer and they will even deal with the paperwork for you. Then you can get out shopping.
Get the best deals on new wheels
If you’re in a position to buy something brand new, doing so in December is a no-brainer. Apart from the natural lull in business, dealers and manufacturers are desperate to hit their annual sales targets and to get units shifted out of the showroom ready for next year’s models.
Remember, it is a buyer’s market, so however attractive the deal might sound, keep your poker face and be ready to haggle further.
Shop smart on used cars
Of course, not everyone has the cash in hand or the open lines of credit to go out and buy a brand new car. Don’t worry, though, the same market forces apply in the used car market, particularly in certain areas.
Always dreamed of driving a convertible on a summer’s day with the roof down? Now is the perfect time to go and get one. If you think that sounds mad, think again. Nobody wants to buy a convertible right now because it is a “summer car” and so you can take your pick and really battle down the price. The beauty of it is, mindsets are still stuck in the 1960s and 70s when ineffectual hoods made a convertible a leaky, draughty place in winter. The convertibles built over the past 20 years are another matter, and are as warm and toasty with the roof up as any other car. So even something that is 10 or 15 years old will provide winter service that is on a par with its hard top version. And you can always go out for a drive with the roof down on Christmas day – just for fun!
