How It Will Benefit The Area
With the opening of a fantastic new leisure centre on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to move to Romford.
Romford has long been one of the most vibrant towns in Havering, and has always had a very strong sporting heritage. So it was with great sadness that the decision to close the area’s local ice rink was met. Five years on though, and Romford is going to be home to a brand new ice-skating venue. Sapphire Ice and Leisure Centre is set to open in February, in a stunning new development right in the heart of the town. This news has been met with lots of excitement in the local community, and further cements Romford’s status as a fantastic place to live.
The closure of a beloved community resource
The old ice skating rink was one of Romford’s most recognisable local landmarks, and it was used by people of all ages for a multitude of purposes. When it was closed down and demolished in 2013, it left a big gap behind. The local ice hockey team, London Raiders, were amongst those who really felt the loss keenly. Proposed projects never got off the ground, and after a few years, people began to give up hope that it would ever be replaced. However, work began on the new Western Road site in 2016, and we’re now mere weeks away from the grand opening.
A bigger and better centre
The new leisure centre will boast lots of state of the art facilities, massively improving on the experience people had at the old ice rink. A full size rink will be available for people to use – and the Raiders are making their return to play at the weekends too. A swimming pool, dance studio and gym will provide alternatives to skating for those not so comfortable on the ice. The new location is fantastic too, with ample car parking facilities and lots of shopping and dining options in the Liberty Shopping Centre just across the road. So why not head along on February 3rd for a day of fun activities?
Another string to Romford’s bow
The opening of this new facility will provide the community with a place to keep fit, pick up new skills, watch live sport and socialise. To put it simply, it’s going to be invaluable. With £25 million being invested into the project, it’s clear to see that a real emphasis is placed on good mental and physical health in Romford. This is one of the reasons why it’s such a great place to live.
