His music is endlessly sampled and covered, his style copied, and his fearless attitude admired in an age when truly dare to break the mould. Here is everything that you need to know about the man – and where to find some stunning prints that will add a little Bowie magic to your home.

The early years

David Bowie didn’t begin life as the musical icon we know and love. He was born David Robert Jones, and spent his childhood in suburban London. However, the seeds for his unique look were sown during a playground fight. Quarrelling over a girl, he and a friend came to blows – with one punch striking David in the left eye. This left him with a permanently dilated pupil, which went on to be one of his most well-known trademarks.

His career

From the outset of his career, David strode to be different. Taking the stage name David Bowie, he started releasing music. He broke through with the hit Space Oddity, which was used in the coverage of the 1969 moon landings. He then went on to have an extremely successful career, reinventing himself constantly. In the 1980’s, his duet with Queen, Under Pressure, became a worldwide hit, along with Let’s Dance.

Personal life

David Bowie’s personal life was just as colourful as his career. He was rumoured to be bisexual, and alluded to his sexuality in a number of interviews. His ex-wife alleged that he had a relationship with Mick Jagger – although neither confirmed this. He lived a life of rock and roll excess during the 1970’s, bringing new meaning to the phrase sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. His children include the film director Duncan Jones, showing creativity runs in the family.

Bowie’s influence

Bowie’s impact on pop culture cannot be underestimated. His iconic Aladdin Sane make-up is one of the most recognisable looks in music, and even now fashion designers take inspiration from Bowie’s style. His music has even made it to space, when an astronaut covered Space Oddity on board the International Space Station. So it’s safe to say that as influences go, David Bowie’s is pretty far reaching.
